The  ‘Chi Landscape’ series were born out of interplay with water, paint, spontaneity and a need to create delicacy - the dominant motivator being the natural push and pull effects of paint laden water on the pre-steeped course grain paper.  This got me thinking about it’s connection with the natural world -  where the elements move each other creating energies in so doing.  There are the winds soft or strong rippling the water in the river - which is also being energized by its own accumulated forces and currents underneath - the rain that falls at a certain angle and with a certain level of force depending on the soft or strong  winds that blow it, or the demeanor of the flowers that follow the sun or remain closed in it’s absence.  ‘Chi’ is a concept in Chinese and Eastern philosophy - It is the life force of all animate things, the quality of the environments, the power of the sun, the moon and the weather systems.  Where chi moves smoothly, plants will be healthy and wildlife will flourish. In my ‘Chi Landscapes - Hydro-magnetic Fields’ - balance is achieved between the paint laden water and the rough surface -whilst keeping the work surface totally flat.  The paint laden water is allowed to flow and find it’s own final destination, with the artist acting like rain or a third force adding more water or paint droplets at will.  Lines of natural movement are scratched over the surface. The paint laden water is pulled in the direction of these lines and follows them along.  For instance, the artist has scratched long movement lines over the ’ skies’ - where wind prevails and short growth lines on the ground.  The paint laden water forms it’s own balance between these lines and the result is really formed by what I term - hydro-magnetism - the pull between an already wet surface and a paint laden water deployment loosely applied or simply dropped in.  Finally, when dry,  the artist adds static/gently-moving strokes of water laden paint to create abstract plants and life forms.
